The Nozovent method improves breathing and thereby the physical capacity and quality of life of people with nasal breathing restrictions – snorers, allergy sufferers, sportsmen, joggers, cyclists and other people who require more air.

The Nozovent method consists of two products, both of which dilate the nasal air passages. These products have a similar effect when it comes to increasing nasal air flow, but they complement one another, as their profiles differ to some degree.

• Nozovent® Classic, a plastic strip that facilitates nasal air flow by dilating the nostrils from the inside and out.
• Nozovent® Nasal Strip, a “plaster” that opens the air passages from outside.

When should you choose Nozovent Classic or Nozovent Nasal Strip?

This is up to the customer. Many people prefer Nozovent Classic in the evening and at night and Nasal Strip during the day.

The Nozovent method offers individual freedom – which creates the potential for increased sales. Customers do not normally choose just one Nozovent product. They often buy both for use in different situations.

Science and well-established experience

The Nozovent method is straightforward and effective. The scientific documentation behind the two products and Nozovent Classic in particular is secure.

In the review article entitled The importance of improved nasal breathing: a review of the Nozovent nostril dilator. Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 2007; 127: 418-423, the author, Professor Björn Petruson, ENT Clinic, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Göteborg, Sweden, describes the effect of dilating the nostrils. In one study, the improvement was 29 per cent. In another, the air flow increased by between 5.5 and 45 per cent.

Patient safety

Nozovent Classic is made of inert, non-toxic plastic. There are no contra-indications for Nozovent products, nor have any incidents involving these products been reported.

The importance of nasal breathing

Scientific studies have demonstrated that nasal breathing has many advantages.

• Improved oxygen uptake capacity. During nasal breathing, the inhaled air includes the gas molecule, nitrogen oxide, which forms in the nasal sinuses. Nitrogen oxide has a positive effect on lung function – the blood vessels dilate and the oxygenation of the blood improves. Improved lung function and oxygenation are beneficial to every individual and, in particular, to people who exercise, sportsmen, cardiovascular patients and patients with reduced oxygen uptake capacity.

• More favourable air temperature.Breathing in through the nose heats the air in a phenomenally effective way. It takes just five 100ths of a second for the air temperature to be raised from zero to 30 degrees as it passes through the nose, a distance of just seven centimetres. Breathing in cold air through the mouth, on the other hand, increases the risk of asthma, otherwise known as cold-induced asthma.

• Increased relative humidity.Problems caused by dry nasal mucous membranes are very common in cold climate zones. However, the relative humidity is low not only when it is cold outdoors but also in an indoor climate that is regulated by air conditioning. A flight to Thailand or the USA can also dry out the nasal mucous membranes. The air on board aircraft is very dry. Not everything can be blamed on the environment, however. Elderly people, and women in particular, develop dry mucous membranes as part of the ageing process. Breathing through the nose gives the air physiologically improved relative humidity.

• Cleaner air. In addition to its ability to heat and humidify, the nose is also able to cleanse the air that is inhaled from particles in the air. Everyone has worked in a dusty environment at some time and then blown their noses. Their handkerchiefs reveal just how much air pollution remains in the nose. Breathing in through the nose does not have the same ‘filter effect’ as breathing through the nose.

Snoring

When the upper airways are partially constricted, a disturbing noise, snoring, occurs while breathing in during sleep. Between 20 and 30 per cent of the population snore. This figure is considerably higher among men before the age of 50. The noise level can correspond to the start of a heavy motorcycle, around 80 decibels. Snoring can also occur in combination with breathing stoppages (apnea), which can reduce oxygen saturation and increase the level of carbon dioxide in the blood. Snoring and overweight

Snoring is more common among people who are overweight and obese. In these conditions, the body fat is located not just around the waist and bottom but also in the throat. The air flow is obstructed and the nose of snoring is produced when the inhaled air has to force its way through a constricted channel. For this reason, weight loss can reduce snoring in the longer term.

Nasal congestion as a result of a deviation in the septum

causes problems of different kinds for the patient, such as snoring, an increased tendency to develop nasal congestion in conjunction with allergies and so on. There are two main causes of septum deviation: damage during delivery and being exposed to violence later in life. Surgery is required to correct septum deviation. The area for surgery is very restricted and deep. The intervention always takes place via the nostrils. The results are good, however; most patients are cured of their problems.
